Anthony Harradine's Hypothesis Testing and CI for proportions Activities.

LUMAT SA, August, 2008.

Session Summary

This 3-hour workshop followed last terms session on 'introductory activities' for the CLT that centred around koala bears. Information about this workshop can be found here. Note that the activities we did in this session have now been written up formally (thanks Mr. Lupton) and can be downloaded from the the bears page.

You will recall that we used 4 contexts in which claims were made:1) the genital herpes advert 2) the cholesterol advert 3) the sexual abuse poster and 4) the Mars bar promotion. Images of each can be found the the powerpoint presentation that can be downloaded below. The powerpoint presentation is the one that I used on the day. If you choose to use it (which you are more than welcome to do), please acknowledge its source.

The latest genital herpes TV advert can be viewed on the WWW - see link below. The one I showed seems to have been removed from the site. You can download it below. If you go to thefacts.com.au and read 'the facts' scrolling across the top of the site you will see the 1 in 8 claim and some other interesting claims that will help you in your teaching, should you wish to use this example. Interestingly it claims that females are twice as likely to have genital herpes than males - hence the extra triangles that you saw in the advert. Also available for download, below, is the paper on which the claims are based.

You will also recall that we used a series of programs that we ran on the Casio 9860 AU. They are available for download below.

I have also now written a short document that explains the behaviour of each program that I hope will be of use to you. Download it from the link below.
